Planning begins for Queen’s Golden Jubilee
Interested groups and individuals in Northern Ireland are being encouraged by local government to apply for financial assistance to help fund their Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The celebrations, which are being marked to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne, are due to take place over the May, June and July months next year.
The Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister, Michael McGimpsey said: “The United Kingdom and the Commonwealth will be celebrating 50 years of the Queen’s reign in 2002 and my department will be promoting this memorable occasion in Northern Ireland.
“To help groups and individuals interested in celebrating this event, financial assistance to develop and fund projects may be applied for through the ‘Awards for All’ scheme.
The scheme, which was launched in Northern Ireland in March, is supported by all the local National Lottery distributors and provides quick and simple access to awards from £500 up to £5,000 for projects involving the arts, sport, heritage, charities, health education and the environment.
Mr McGimpsey pointed out that his Department would also be making some separate funding available for those organisations unable to apply for lottery funding and that a ‘toolkit’ containing guidance on organising a celebratory event would be published shortly.
He added: “The Golden Jubilee will be an opportunity to look forward as well as looking back at the events and changes which have taken place over the last half century. I know that many local communities as well as charitable and other organisations will want to mark the occasion and I would encourage people of all ages, cultures and walks of life to get involved.”
Marking the occasion British prime minister Tony Blair has announced that Monday 3 June will be an additional Bank Holiday to mark the Golden Jubilee.
The Spring Bank Holiday, which would otherwise fall on Monday 27 May, will be moved to Tuesday 4 June.
Together, these two Bank Holidays will provide a four-day central weekend for the Golden Jubilee celebrations. (AMcE)

Over 660 Motorists Found Speeding Over Easter Bank Holidays
