Gateway to shut down operations throughout UK and Ireland
American computer manufacturer Gateway is set to shut down its operations throughout Ireland and the UK in the face of a global downturn in the PC market.
While an official announcement detailing the job losses is yet to be made, it is expected that the redundancies will be swiftly implemented. While the company is currently ‘in negotiations’ with unions over the proposed pulling-out, this is thought to be nothing more than a formality to satisfy the ’30 day’ rule whereby businesses must enter consultations for a period of time before realising significant job losses.
The move will come as a particular blow to Ireland, where over 800 people are to be made redundant at the company’s Clonshaugh plant, near Dublin, which was originally opened in 1993 to service Gateway’s Europe, Middle East and Africa operations. Gateway also has outlets throughout Ireland and the UK, with its British headquarters located in Uxbridge.
The company had announced a campaign of job cuts back in April, shedding ten per cent of its worldwide staff, following an ill-timed decision to expand its retail outlets throughout the US, which unfortunately coincided with a downward trend in overall PC sales. (CL)
