Overnight Snow Delays Commuters

Road traffic has quickly returned to near normal this morning after widespread disruption during today's rush hour.

Some Flybe flights at George Best Belfast City Airport have also been delayed after the airline experienced technical issues with its de-icing equipment.

However, the eight flights were expected to get underway before noon after the airline said its engineers had identified the problem and expected the repair to be completed by then.

Snow coated many areas of Northern Ireland overnight with 5 cms likely on high ground.

Showers have been most frequent over counties Londonderry, Antrim, Tyrone, Fermanagh as well as in north Down and the Roads Service said motorists should be aware that wintry conditions could cause travel disruption in places.

They said salting operations had been ongoing since 5pm on Sunday but many major routes were 'nose-to-tail' with slow moving traffic for several hours this morning.

Showers are expected to continue to fall on Monday, but by the afternoon most of the snow will be over the hills with rain, sleet and hail more likely at lower levels.

It is to remain cold with a top temperature of 5C while any fresh falls of snow on Monday night will be mostly confined to the hills as freezing temperatures set in. However, rain is predicted later in the week.

Across the British Isles, heavy rain and gale force winds have already wreaked havoc over parts of England, while snow and ice are instead affecting roads across Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of Northern England.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for these areas and police are urging motorists to be aware of the risk of black ice on the roads.
