Queen & US President's Visits 'Over Budget'

Two separate visits by VIPs to the Irish Republic cost almost €16m more than was anticipated.

The Dáil has heard that the visits of the Queen and US President cost €36m, far over the original budget of €20m, but the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said that the outstanding funding required by the Gardaí for the visits is being met.

Fianna Fáil's Dara Calleary had originally asked the Dáil if the budget for Gardaí programmes had been curtailed in any way to pay for the visits but the Minister said €15m was provided to them directly and that the Gardaí did not request an additional sum - because it was not required due to "efficiencies effected".

Mr Shatter has also said he had received the review of police services from the Garda Commissioner and an announcement will be made next week in relation to savings in this area - but he said there was no reason for any community to be alarmed regarding possible Garda station closures.
