Apprentice Boys await parades commission decision

A Parade's Commission decision, which re-routes an Apprentice Boys parade in north Belfast planned for Saturday August 11, is being reviewed following an appeal lodged by the Ligoniel Walkers Club.

The traditional annual feeder parade for the main ‘Relief of Derry’ celebrations in Derry was due to pass by the Ardoyne shops, and the predominantly nationalist Mountainview area.

The Parades Commission determination issued this week specifically banned the Ligoniel Walkers Club from walking down part of the Crumlin Road and passing the junction at Woodvale Road and Woodvale Parade in an effort to avoid disruption to the life of the communities.

It is understood that in opposition to this the Ligoniel Walkers Club lodged an appeal with the Parades Commission who are expected to make their decision known before Friday August 10.

Restrictions have also been placed on the Apprentice Boys planned march down the lower Ormeau Road and for the first time the Belfast Walkers Club will be blocked from walking down the road after they have crossed the Ormeau Bridge. (AMcE)
