McGuinness hits out at Magherafelt attacks
Education Minister and MP for Mid Ulster Martin McGuinness has condemned the attempted pipebomb attacks in Magherafelt as part of a “cowardly” campaign of intimidation by loyalists against Catholic homes.
Army bomb experts were called to deal with several suspicious devices left near houses in the Leckagh Walk area of the town on the afternoon of Saturday 4 August. Alerted by a telephone warning, they located the first pipebomb at the rear of a house, while a second device was found nearby, also near a residence. Both devices are made safe, and have been taken away for further forensic examination.
Speaking out about the event, Mr McGuinness said that he believed loyalists were behind the attack, and described their actions as “deplorable and cowardly”.
He added: “Clearly, given these two pipe bomb attacks, the recent attack on O’Donovan Rossa’s GAA club and the attacks across south Derry and throughout the north of Ireland, there is a very real danger of further deaths. I would urge all nationalists to continue to be vigilant.” (CL)
