North West to benefit from natural gas power plant
The creation of a new natural gas fired power station in County Londonderry is set to create almost 400 jobs during the construction phase of the development.
Work on the state-of-the-art Coolkeeragh power plant is to commence in early 2002, following the granting of planning permission on Tuesday 31 July. When operative, it is thought that the station, which utilises combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology will benefit towns and communities throughout the region, drawing its fuel from the proposed new natural gas pipeline which will stretch from Belfast to the North West. The development will replace the existing oil-fired station, which is scheduled to close in 2004.
CCGT technology has been described as an extremely energy-efficient, environmentally friendly way to commercially generate electricity, and it is hoped that such savings may trickle down to the consumer in the form of reduced electricity costs.
Richard Sterling of Coolkeeragh Power Ltd, who partnered ESB International Investments in visualising the project, thanked Derry City Council and the DoE Planning service for their help during the planning process.
Michael Aherne, Manager of ESB Northern Ireland, added: “This new station represents a private sector investment of £150 million in the infrastructure of the North West, bringing much needed jobs and many other direct benefits to the region”. (CL)

British Gas to raise gas prices in New Year
British Gas is set to raise domestic gas prices by 5.3 per cent in the New Year, increasing the average UK domestic gas bill by £17 per year. The company blamed the rise in costs due to the cost of buying wholesale gas almost doubling in the last year and a half.

Energy Minister Charles Hendry will today give the go-ahead for InterGen's proposals to construct a new 900MW gas power plant at the London Gateway Logistics Park, Coryton, Essex. The plans are for a new £600 million power station comprising of up to two CCGT generating units, each around 450MW in capacity.

Work on gas extension to begin in autumn
Work on the Coolkeeragh Power Station is to begin this autumn, it has been confirmed. Around 600 jobs will be created when work on the £150 million gas pipeline development to the northwest begins. It is being built in order to facilitate natural gas-generated electricity.

Committee to visit Coolkeeragh Power Station
A delegation from the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee for Enterprise, Trade and Investment is to visit Coolkeeragh Power Station on Friday 5 July 2002. Committee Chairperson Pat Doherty will lead the delegation of assembly members to visit the new station in order to learn more about the project.
