Less Service 'Equals More Complaints'

NI's Police Ombudsman has been looking the level and type of complaints ledged against the PSNI.

His office has today published a report 'Characteristics of police officers that attract complaints from the public'.

Among many conclusions, Police Ombudsman, Al Hutchinson's document recorded that officers with less than five years' service were "over-represented among those who attracted complaints".

They said that further analysis also recorded more complaint levels on PSNI community officers - again those with less than five years' service - who serve in the Response and Neighbourhood Policing Unit (R&NPU).

Age was also an apparent issue as officers aged 18-44 were overrepresented in the complained against groups.

Both male and female officers with less than five years' service were overrepresented among those who attracted complaints.

Similarly, officers in the Tactical Support role group aged 18-34 were over-represented among those who attracted three or more complaints, whilst those aged 35+ were under-represented among those who attracted three or more complaints.

Overall, 55% of officers who had three or more complaints had worked in the force for less than five years.
