NI Youth Unemployment Soars

Youth unemployment in Northern Ireland has more than doubled in the last four years it has been revealed.

According to recent figures the rate of youth unemployment in Northern Ireland are highest in all of the UK and have risen by 155% since 2008.

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry said: "Addressing the issues of youth unemployment and the growth in long-term unemployment are key issues for our economy. Having secured additional funding from the Executive, I welcome the valuable employment opportunities that this initiative will provide across Northern Ireland, particularly in areas of high unemployment such as West Belfast, North Belfast and the Foyle area."

Unemployment is at its highest since 1997 and approximately 20% of Northern Ireland’s young people are unemployed. Economists warn unemployment will continue to rise in the short and medium term.

New figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency, have revealed a "marginal decrease" in unemployment for the period October – December, 2015. Drop In Number Of People Claiming Unemployment Benefits
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland has dropped to 38,700, a decrease of 500 over the month. New figures released for the period September to November 2015 show that the Northern Ireland Labour Force Survey unemployment rate was 5.9%, a drop of 0.1% over the quarter.

'Don't Stigmatise Unemployed', Says Alliance

Man Wanted In Ireland On Drug Offences Arrested In South Belfast
A 59-year-old man wanted in the Republic of Ireland has been arrested in south Belfast by the PSNI's International Policing Unit. Wanted to stand trial for drugs offences that occurred in the Kilkenny area in 2012.

Drop In Number Of People Claiming Unemployment Benefits
There has been a drop in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland. According to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), 500 fewer people were claiming unemployment benefits in November, bring the total to 33,600. The Northern Ireland rate of 5.7% is above the UK average.
