Shivers Guilty Of Massereene Murders

Two men accused of killing British soliders outside their Northern Ireland barracks in 2009 have appeared in court.

During the high profile hearing, one was found guilty while the other was acquitted.

Brian Shivers, 46, from Magherafelt was found guilty of murdering Mark Quinsey, 23, and Patrick Azimkar, 21 and has been sentenced to life in prision.

However prominent Lurgan republican, Colin Duffy, will walk free after being found not guilty of the murders.

The soldiers were shot dead as they collected a pizza outside Massereene Barracks in Antrim.

It is understood that the judge felt their was insufficient evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Duffy committed the murder.

He was satisfied that Duffy's DNA was found on a seat belt buckle of the car believed to have been used by the gunmen and on a latex glove tip - but that the prosecution had failed to link the defendant to the murder plot.

Shivers however has been found guilty on all charges as well as six counts of attempted murder and one of possession of two firearms and ammunition with intent to endanger life.
