Youth Unemployment Must Be Addressed

Ulster Unionist MLA, Danny Kinahan, has outlined the importance of tackling youth unemployment and has called on the Department for Employment and Learning to address the issue before a generation is lost.

Following a reply to a written question to Dr Stephen Farry, the Minister for Education and Learning, the South Antrim MLA commented

He said: "My fear is that the Department isn’t doing enough to stimulate opportunities, particularly aimed at those aged 24 and under; this is a major issue. We have around 20,000 young people who are out of in Northern Ireland.

"Following the acquisition of new skills the younger generation need to be blooded into the working realm as soon as possible. This would enable the young to use their skill, gain confidence and get a real sense of pride and self-worth. Unfortunately, the reality they face is one of tremendous pressure to find any outlet.

"The biggest hurdle to overcome seems to be the issue of experience; the result is a self-perpetuating cycle where a bright and enthusiastic generation is lost to the world of continual unemployment and consequently, a longer threat to the future our economy.

"I am encouraged to hear that the Minister of Education and Learning has recently circulated proposals to the Executive, however, we need action sooner rather than later. This Executive has had plenty of time to formulate a plan of action and tackle the issue; they are failing badly at delivering. It is about time to see some real results."
