NI Unemployment Below UK Average
Unemployment in Northern Ireland remains below the average for the UK, European Union and Republic of Ireland.
Figures released today for the period October - December 2011 show that the Northern Ireland unemployment rate fell slightly over the quarter to 7.2%. This was down 0.1% over the quarter and down 0.8% over the year.
Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said: "The latest labour market figures for Northern Ireland continue to demonstrate that our current unemployment rate of 7.2% compares favourably to the equivalent rates for the UK (8.4%), European Union (9.8%) and Republic of Ireland (14.3%).
"However, more recent figures for January 2012 show an increase of 600 in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits. This increase in claimants was the largest for several months and emphasises that there is still work to do in order to move on from the impact of the economic downturn.
Ms Foster said the Executive's decision to fund a number of capital projects was a welcome boost for the NI economy as a whole.
She said: "This major investment will generate in excess of 2,500 construction jobs which is welcome news for the construction industry at this difficult time. To help us build a stronger, more vibrant and competitive economy for Northern Ireland I would encourage stakeholders respond to the consultation on the Executive's Economic Strategy, which closes next week.”"
