NIW Fined £500 For Pollution Offence

Northern Ireland Water Ltd (NIW) pleaded guilty and was fined £500 plus court costs of £25 at Craigavon Magistrates' Court for making a polluting discharge to a waterway. On 13 March 2009, a Water Quality Inspector acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency observed a white pollutant discharging from a pipe to the River Bann. Further investigation revealed that the discharge was from an outfall from a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO). The source of the polluting discharge was traced to Foundry Street Sewage Pumping Station (SPS), which is owned and operated by NIW. A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
