TWO KILLED IN HEAD-ON LORRY CRASH

Two men have been killed in a road accident involving two lorries in County Antrim.

The head-on collision happened shortly after 4am on Tuesday June 26 on the main Belfast to Larne Road, killing the drivers of both vehicles.

The men have been named as Graham Gowdy, 38, from Hawthorn Grove, Glynn in Larne and Norman Strain, 37, from Glenview Drive in Newtownabbey.

Divisional Fire Officer for the area, Ken Leithem, said both men had died by the time fire services arrived at the scene. He said that the crash involved two lorries and in order to release the casualties, the fire brigade had to use heavy cutting equipment.

The police are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the road about the time of the accident to contact them.

The A8 road between Ballynure and the Deerpark Road remained closed for most of the day while heavy lifting equipment was brought in to lift the lorries.

Meanwhile, a four-year-old boy has died in a road accident in Newtownards.

The child was a front seat passenger in a car which collided with another vehicle on the Crawfordsburn Road on Monday afternoon. (AMcE)
