UNACCEPTABLE ATTACKS ON EMERGENCY SERVICES
THE Northern Ireland Health Minister Bairbre de Brún has expressed serious concern at the increasing number of attacks on the fire and ambulance services and condemned them as “totally unacceptable”.
Speaking to the Northern Ireland Assembly Ms de Brún said: “Recent attacks on fire service crews and ambulance personnel, whether in North Belfast, elsewhere in the city or in the North West, are part of a worrying rising trend, which has, for example, seen attacks on ambulance crews currently running at a rate more than double that of last year.
“While the injuries and intimidation suffered by crews from both services has been my primary concern, I am also aware that damage to equipment has been considerable. During the past 12 months, the ambulance service has suffered damage of around £100,000 and the fire service about £50,000. This is money that could be better used in the care of patients or answering emergency calls. Such attacks are totally unacceptable.
“I know that these views are shared by politicians and community representatives across the board, and I would appeal to them, as well as the community in general, to assist all of us in giving those in the fire and ambulance services the respect and thanks they deserve. These people are carrying out a valuable job and we should all be giving them our full support”. (AMcE)

Motorist dies in Co Armagh school bus crash
A man has died following a collision between a car and a school bus in Co Armagh this morning. The victim, named as Jason Davidson Murray, 26, from Shandon Park in Newry, died when his car collided with the bus at around 8.30am on the Tandragee Road outside Newry.

Ambulance fleet to receive £10m for improvements

The announcement last week came at the publication of a document summarising the outcome of public consultation on an Implementation Plan for improving ambulance services.
