E-CONSULTATION IS THE WAY FORWARD
A conference exploring the possibilities of using technology to aid the consultation and decision making process was held in Queens University in Belfast on Monday.
The event, organised by the E-Consultation Study Group, was aimed at those who have responsibility for holding or responding to consultation exercises.
Speaking at the opening of the conference Minister Denis Haughey from the Office of the First and Deputy First Minster said: “These are very exciting times for everyone with the development of new information and communication technologies.”
He said: "Many countries have already shown that it is possible to enhance access to and participation in the democratic process. It is not only possible, but should be our ultimate aim, to adapt these developments in order to involve the citizen in new and innovative ways.”
Other speakers at the conference included Guido Enthoven from the Institute for Social Innovation in the Netherlands and Tom Gordon from the German National Computing Research Centre.
The e-consultation study group was formed in September 2000 and seeks to promote innovative ways of consultation using technology and which complement existing methods to provide opportunities for greater participation.
The group includes representatives from the public, private, community and voluntary sectors and universities. (AMcE)
