Concerns Over BMI Job Losses

Alliance East Belfast MP Naomi Long has expressed her concern at the proposed 60 job losses at BMI's operations at Belfast City Airport. A further 40 employees will have to commute to London to continue their work.

Naomi Long MP said: "I am very concerned at these planned redundancies at BMI. There is still a consultation to finish and it is my hope that BMI and the unions will be able to work together.

"I know this must be a worrying time for these BMI workers. I would urge BMI to work with the Department of Employment and Learning to put together a redundancy service programme for the workers that are let go. I have already contacted the Minister of Employment and Learning on this issue.

"There is also the issue of the future of the Belfast City airport to London Heathrow airport route which has been a huge benefit to our economy. BMI have said that they will keep this route open until October but I would urge them to make this more than just a short term promise."
