PSNI Gun Left In House After Raid

An internal PSNI investigation has been launched after an officer left their gun and ammunition in a North Belfast house during a raid.

The house in the Ardoyne area of North Belfast was raided following allegations that a 39-year-old man, living in the house, was involved in dissident republican activity.

After the house was searched an officer involved in the raid realised that a belt holding a firearm and ammunition was missing.

It is understood that the gun was left on a child's bed in the house however no children were in the house at the time of the raid.

Twenty minutes later, police returned to the property and with the consent of the householder retrieved the item.

In a statement the PSNI said they were "treating the temporary loss of this equipment extremely seriously and have commenced an internal disciplinary investigation into the circumstances of the incident".

It is believed that the house-owner intends to make a formal complaint to the Police Ombudsman.
