POLICE AND FIRE OFFICERS ATTACKED DURING BLAZE

A crowd of children, some as young as nine years, attacked police and fire officers with stones and other missiles while they attended a serious fire at a bar on the Whiterock Road in west Belfast which is believed to have been started deliberately on June 18.

The fire started at 4.15pm and six crews were brought in to fight the blaze at the Sliabh Dubh bar. More than 100 customers who had been at a funeral were inside at the time, and they escaped through the front of the building.

When police and fire officers reached the scene they were attacked by a large crowd of children. At one point a petrol bomb was thrown and rubbish was strewn across the road and set alight. The stoning continued until police left at around 8.30pm.

A police spokesman said: “This was more than a case of children playing with fire and could well have resulted in a child being seriously injured. We are urging parents to act responsibly, to know where their children are and to ensure that they are not involved in any activity which could result in serious consequences.”

The building was extensively damaged although it is not yet known how the fire was started.

There were no reports of any injuries. (CD)
