REVISED MAST LEGISLATION EXPECTED
THE Northern Ireland Executive has backed proposals for tougher planning regulations on phone mast building in Northern Ireland.
The Executive discussed a paper on Thursday June 14 from the Minister of Environment reporting on the outcome of the consultation process on the control of telecommunications masts. It was agreed to introduce full planning permission procedures for all new masts.
The Executive reviewed the forthcoming legislative programme and gave its approval to the introduction in the Assembly on June 25 of the Industrial Development Bill to establish a new single economic development agency.
The new laws are to be put before the assembly in autumn, but until then the current legislation still stands.
At the moment the current legislation says that if a mast is under 15 metres high then developers must seek planning permission. If the developers do not receive a reply within 42 days of their application they can erect the mast.
The Executive said that a balance had to be found between public concern and the growing need for mobile telephone services to support the development of the economy. (CD)

The Governing Bodies Association has received legal advice on the Transfer 2010 policy. The association represents 52 voluntary grammar schools across NI.
