SDLP Calls For PSNI To Do More To Solve Crimes Against The Elderly

SDLP Policing Spokesperson Conall McDevitt has said the police must do more for the public to have confidence in their ability to solve crimes against the elderly.

Mr McDevitt was speaking after it was revealed that just one in every 18 cases involving crimes against older people result in a suspect being arrested or charged.

The South Belfast MLA said: "These are shocking figures which present a real challenge to the PSNI to increase people’s confidence in their ability to successfully deal with crimes against the elderly.

"I urge people with elderly neighbours to look out for them and to report any suspicious activity and I appeal to communities to come forward to the police with information about those who are responsible for these disgusting crimes against vulnerable people.

"Attacks on the elderly are totally unacceptable in our society and it is vital that the police up their game in solving these crimes and to and achieve justice for victims.

"I will be raising this matter directly with the Chief Constable this evening."
