Miss Ireland Stripped Of Title

Miss Ireland, Máire Hughes, was yesterday stripped of her title.

Newly crowned Hughes, who is the current Miss Mayo, was found to be too old. The cut-off age for entering the competition is 24, she will be 26 on her next birthday.

Rebecca Maguire, from Belfast, who was placed as Runner-up on Sunday's final, has now been named as the new Miss Ireland.

Máire Hughes had listed her age as 21.

Students Get A Guided Tour

Earlier this month, Maranco Construction, Dundrum, hosted an excellent and very informative study tour for South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Building Construction students.

The students, from the College's Downpatrick campus, visited a unique home which is being constructed using green oak frame as the main structural element and combines skills and construction techniques which would have been used some hundred years ago.

The tour gave students the chance to see first-hand sustainable construction methods in action and learn how the skills they are learning now will be used in practice in the future.

Dickson Welcomes News On A8 Road

Alliance East Antrim MLA and Regional Development Spokesperson, Stewart Dickson, has welcomed a statement from the Minister of Regional Development that work on the upgrade of the A8 road between Belfast and Larne is expected to begin in June this year.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: "I am delighted that this scheme is going ahead. The A8 is a strategically important route on the Core European Network and I am confident that its upgrade will be of great economic benefit to Larne and to East Antrim generally. It will provide an excellent connection between the Port of Larne, Belfast and Dublin.

Northern Ireland pupils are in a class of their own
Northern Ireland students have outperformed their peers in England and Wales in both A-level and the new AS level exams. Figures released by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) on Thursday August 16 show a record 48,000 grades have been issued to Northern Ireland students across all exam boards.

Awareness week highlights risks of working at heights
Local companies have thrown their weight behind the European Health & Safety Week to raise awareness of the danger of working at heights on construction sites. The safety initiative comes in the wake of incidents in which two men tragically lost their lives as a result of falls.

NISRA Publish Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin
The latest edition of the Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin has been published by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). The bulletin provides a general measure of change in real terms in the output of the Construction Industry in Northern Ireland.

Rise In Number Of GCSE Students Achieving A*- C Grades
There has been a significant increase in the number of GCSE students achieving the A*- C grades. The proportion of entries awarded A* - C grades has risen by 0.7% this year to 78.7% Education Minister, John O'Dowd, congratulated the students and said they should be proud of all their hard work.
