Millions Poured In To 2013 City Of Culture
Millions of pounds from the public purse will be invested in Londonderry as it prepares for its 2013 role as UK City of Culture.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said £9m has been pledged to improve infrastructure, cultural projects and venues.
Up to £10m could be invested by the Department for Social Development (DSD).
Upgrading works at Queen's Quay, which started in February, are due to be completed by the end of May to "transform a key part of the riverside", Mr McCausland said.
Works carried out to upgrade footpaths and improve lighting and road surfaces can be seen at 13 locations including Queen’s Quay, Spencer Road, Water Street, Foyle Street, Strand Road and Baronet Street.
Community projects received grant money too – the DSD handed the 'cultural and community infrastructure strand' over to the Ilex Urban Regeneration Company Ltd and the Arts Council.
A £260,000 glazed roof canopy will be built in the Craft Village, providing an all-weather multi-purpose events venue.
And funding of more than £200,000 has also been provided to the Gasyard Development Trust to refurbish the Gasyard centre. The multi-purpose venue will be used for music, dance and exhibitions.
Mr McCausland said: "The voluntary and community sector has an important role to play in both preparing for and contributing to the celebrations next year. I am pleased to announce that funding will help upgrade community facilities and will facilitate the sector’s full participation in a range of 2013 celebratory events."

The PSNI have launched an investigation into the cause of a fatal collision on the Cornascriebe Road, between Tandragee and Hamiltonsbawn, on Tuesday 13th February. Police received a report shortly after 2.30pm of a collision involving a car and a tractor.
