NI Ministers To Give Queen Jubilee Present

The Northern Ireland Executive will consider sending a gift to the Queen for her Diamond Jubilee.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness told the Assembly he recognised that many Northern Irish people hold the Queen "in very high esteem".

The move came in response to a proposal from First Minister Peter Robinson.

Mr McGuinness said during Assembly Question Time that he and Mr Robinson were making an effort to commemorate events alongside the Irish and British governments.

The next decade marks many significant anniversaries for Northern Ireland, including the centenary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant, the centenary of the First World War and the centenary of the Easter Rising.

Mr McGuinness said: "Thus far I think we have successfully managed to ensure that we sent a very powerful message out there to the community that we have to move forward respecting each other's diversity."

The Deputy First Minister has hinted he may meet the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee tour, but so far there has been no word of what present the Executive might give to the Queen.

Gregory Campbell of the DUP told a BBC reporter that the present Sinn Fein position "was better than murdering the Queen's uncle".

He was referring to the 1979 murder of Lord Mountbatten by the IRA.
