Bomb Thrown At Police Car In Twinbrook

A bomb has been thrown at a police vehicle in the Twinbrook area of west Belfast.

The attack came just days after protestors in Londonderry’s Creggan area damaged the front of a police car with a suspected nail bomb.

Officers went to Twinbrook, Belfast just after midnight on Wednesday to deal with reports of a broken window in a house in Whin Park.

But it is believed they were lured there deliberately so they could be attacked.

The officers were inside the property when a bomb exploded next to their Landrover, causing damage to a number of vehicles.

No-one was injured in the attack but a senior officer said this was a matter of luck.

Chief Inspector Darrin Jones said: "We are very fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured, as this occurred in a residential area, putting the lives of those living here at serious risk."

Mr Jones said the PDNI remained "committed to providing a service across Northern Ireland".

DUP MLA and Policing Board member Jonathan Craig said he believed a hand grenade had been thrown at two police officers, who were sheltered by cars which "probably saved their lives".

Two residents' cars were also damaged in the attack.

On Saturday a bomb was thrown at a police jeep in Londonderry, causing significant damage.

Vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs claimed responsibility for the attack, which came during police searches of the area.
