Derry hold first paper-free council meeting

Derry City Council is set to convene its first paper-free e-committee meeting tonight.

Chairman of Policy and Resources, Cllr McKeever, said it is an important initiative and an opportunity to move forward on the e-agenda.

“We are always keen to promote new ways of working and tonight’s meeting is a first attempt to work without paper," he said.

"It supports our own environmental policy and also encourages everyone to move forward in the area of electronic government. We hope that the pilot programme will set the scene for all Council business to be conducted in this way”.

Laptop facilities are available for all Councillors and Chief Officers and it is expected that IT officers will be on hand to iron out any last-minute technology issues.

Damien McMahon, City Secretary and Solicitor, responsible for Committee Administration, said that the move by Council would "save money, time, energy and resources".

“Normal committee administration requires the production of at least 20 full reports per meeting," he said.

"If you consider that on some occasions the Council may have between three to five committee meetings per week, the paper requirement can become quite substantial. Management Team are already conducting weekly meetings through electronic minutes and agendas and this has been very successful. The Council fully supports this initiative as a worthwhile pilot as it fulfils many of its obligations with Local Agenda 21 and other Environmental Strategies.”

The Policy and Resources Meeting will take place tonight at the Council Chamber, Guildhall at 7.30pm
