Police Attacked After Derry, Craigavon Call-Outs

Missiles including suspected blast bombs were thrown at police in Northern Ireland this weekend.

Violence broke out in Craigavon on Friday night when officers were investigating a suspicious object at the Lismore roundabout.

Police declared the security alert to be an elaborate hoax.

Mayor Carla Lockhart said violence "damages the area".

She believed the attacks were a symptom of a shadowy background force.

"I do not blame the children who are rioting," she said. "I blame those faceless individuals who are manipulating those people behind the scenes."

On Saturday, controlled explosions were carried out on two suspicious objects found at Aileagh Road in Ballymagroarty, Londonderry.

Stones and bottles were thrown at police and army officers dealing with the devices.

Police had been called to the scene at about 6pm but both items were declared hoaxes.

The attacks come after a series of incidents where police have been lured to an area with a hoax call, and then attacked.

And a security alert in Larne, County Antrim, this morning ended after a suspicious object turned out to be a hoax.

The device was discovered on Victoria Road at about 5.30AM today.

The road was closed but everything is now back to normal after the alert, which occured close to the town's council offices.

The roads have now been reopened.
