Oak Trees Planted As Jubilee 'Living Legacy'
Belfast’s Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, has joined people across the city to plant trees as living memories of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Large Quercus robur (oaks) are to be planted by the Lord Mayor in parks in north, south, east and west Belfast, with smaller oak trees available in pots for guests to take away as a personal memento.
The plantings began in Orangefield Park, a Field in Trust for the Diamond Jubilee,this morning.
There will be an afternoon planting at 2pm in Blythefield Park.
Tomorrow the plantings will take place at Glencairn Park at 10am and Grove Park at 2pm.
Mr Robinson said the trees were a symbol of "strength and longevity".
He said: "This is a legacy that will last. Many of those attending the planting ceremonies with me will be children and in the years ahead we want them to have a living memory of this event."
Children could take small trees away that would grow with them, he said.
Then in future they could point to the trees and remember: 'That's from when I celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II'.
The Lord Mayor said: "The Diamond Jubilee has been a wonderful event for many thousands of people. It is a time to take stock, to look back at what has been achieved but turn our eyes forward to the future as well."
One of the aims of the Diamond Jubilee is to create new woodland areas in towns and cities across the country.

Charity Aims To Improve Future Woodlands
A charity has been created which is dedicated to improvement of the quality of native broadleaved trees through tree breeding programmes. Future Trees Trust was launched today by Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill and Shane McEntee, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast has helped plant tree saplings at a new tree nursery at Groveland's Park and Cavehill Primary School, as part of the Belfast City Council's One Million Trees campaign. The campaign is a joint pledge, between public, private and voluntary sector partners to plant one million native trees across the city by 2035.

Sixty Jubilee beacons have been lit across Northern Ireland to celebrate the Queen’s sixty years on the throne. The first was lit at 10pm yesterday in Carrickfergus, with events unrolling across the province’s cities and landmarks thereafter.
