CCTV camera bulldozed by loyalists

Loyalists have been blamed for bulldozing a closed circuit television camera to the ground in east Belfast last night.

The incident happened at around 10pm last night at the Bryson Street junction on the Lower Newtownards Road.

Security forces were attacked with bricks and bottles when they moved in to deal with the situation. However the large crowd was eventually dispersed when reinforcements eventually arrived.

East Belfast Sinn Fein MLA, Joe O'Donnell said the attempt to remove the camera was a possible prelude to an attack on the nearby nationalist enclave of Short Strand.

However, Ulster Unionist councillor, Jim Rodgers blamed republicans for what he saw as a fourth night of trouble orchestrated by "Sinn Fein/Provisional IRA".
