'On Yer Bike', Says Belfast City Council

Belfast City Council staff are hoping for a 'wheelie good time' in Belfast this week.

The council is encouraging people to cycle around the city to keep fit and cut carbon emissions.

On Friday (June 22), City Hall staff are expecting hundreds of cyclists to show up for a free breakfast of sausage baps or cereal and yoghurt to anyone who registers in advance.

Food will be available between 8am and 10am.

Gerard McCabe of the city council’s Parks and Leisure Committee said: "Sustainable transport and a healthier city are two of the prime aims for Belfast that we in the city council wish to achieve. Cycling is good for your physical health and for your economic health, try it and see."

Supervised cycle parking will be available at the front of City Hall during the breakfast.

On Saturday, 23 June there will be an 'Endless Summer' cycling event between 11am and 2pm at Ormeau Park to celebrate the end of the school year.

Bike Clubs are being encouraged to take part in mountain biking and road cycling sessions at the park with a chance to test new off road woodland trails.

Maintenance workshops will be available as will light refreshments.

Bike Club Development Officer, Tim Edgar said: "I hope that maybe people who perhaps haven't been on their bikes for a while will take the opportunity to get back into the sport."

To register for the free breakfast this Friday, call 02890320202 ext. 3436, or visit www.belfastcity.gov.uk/bikeweek.
