Council Asked To Fly Armed Forces Flag
The Ministry of Defence has asked Belfast City Council to fly a flag for a full week to mark Armed Forces Day.
But the letter has arrived too late to be discussed by the full council and in the past, there has been no consensus between political parties on whether or not to fly it.
Armed Forces Day, now in its fourth year, is on Saturday June 30.
It is aimed at showing support for the UK's armed forces.
A council committee has now been tasked with deciding whether to fly the flag or not.
DUP councillor Lee Reynolds said his party would support the MoD's request, as in previous years, and there was "increasing recognition" of the role nationalists have played in the UK's armed forces.
But Jim McVeigh, the Sinn Fein leader on Belfast City Council, said: "This isn't Manchester or London. The British Army have played a divisive if not a malign role here in Northern Ireland".

On average, eight police officers were assaulted while on duty every day over the last five years, according to new statistics released by the PSNI. Commenting on the "stark" statistics, Superintendent Gary Busch from the PSNI's Operational Support Department said: "In 2022/23, we had 3,272 assaults on officers reported to us.

Belfast International Airport Serves 5.9m Passengers In 2023
Latest figures show that 2023 was a successful year for Belfast International Airport as it served 5.9 million passengers. Annual traffic results published by VINCI Airports show that there were almost 50,000 total aircraft movements at Belfast International in 2023, which is an increase of 23 per cent on 2022 figures.

22-Year-Old Man Jailed For Rape At Laganside Crown Court
A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to six years for rape at Laganside Crown Court. Ahmad Alsbaihi was sentenced to six years. He will serve three years in custody and three years on licence. He will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and will be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for 10 years.
