Police Injured In Queen's Visit Conflict

Nine police officers have been injured during rioting in the Broadway area of west Belfast.

Police said a crowd of about 100 people gathered and threw 21 petrol bombs and other missiles at officers last night.

A PSNI spokesperson said the area was calm by midnight.

The trouble is believed to have originated in tensions over a tricolour and slogan displayed on Blacks Mountain in west Belfast earlier yesterday.

Coinciding with the Queen's visit, the protest display contained the slogan 'Eriu Is Our Queen', a reference to the mythological goddess of Ireland, who is better known as Eire.

A man was taken to hospital after being injured when allegedly trying to prevent a group of loyalists from removing the flag.

Fighting broke out after dark between groups from the Village and Falls Road sections of the Broadway road, which are divided by a large roundabout.

Police confined the trouble to the Park Centre area on the Park Road side.

The police spokesperson did not confirm how severe officers' injuries were, but said the disorder was instigated by "local criminal tensions".
