NEET Numbers To Top 50,000, Assembly Hears
The number of so-called 'NEETs' in Northern Ireland is set to top 50,000 the Assembly has been warned.
At present, there are about 46,000 people aged 18-24 and not in employment, education or training.
Minister for Employment and Learning Stephen Farry warned of a "real risk" the people affected could become long-term unemployed.
He said: "These are people who would have otherwise expected to be in work today if it was not for the economic downturn and reduced opportunities. Some simply need the chance to gain experience. It is a catch-22 position for those young people: they cannot secure a job without experience, but they cannot get experience without a job."
Six months ago, Department of Employment and Learning workers told an Assembly committee they were unable to keep track of young people in the 'Neet' situation and would need to put extra systems in place.
Yesterday, Mr Farry unveiled a £5.8m programme aimed at giving young people additional time with careers advisers.
