Nursery Pays Tribute To Tragic Student

A nursery school in County Antrim has dedicated its new outdoor playhouse to a student who died in a road accident last year.

Ammie Rea, 19, was on work experience at Ballyclare Nursery School, where her four-year-old brother Harry was a pupil, at the time of her death.

The Ballyclare Gazette newspaper has reported that the playhouse in the grounds of the nursery is "in memory" of Ammie, a childcare student who hoped to become a classroom assistant.

She was killed on the morning of December 4th 2011 when the car she was a passenger in crashed near Doagh.

Her funeral at the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle in east Belfast drew 1,200 mourners.

Her mother Tracey paid tribute to a daughter who was "drawn to children".

She said: "Ammie loved her course and anything to do with the wee ones. She was working in Harry's class at the nursery school and loved being able to see him on a Thursday and Friday and to bring him home with her. She saw a different side of him there. At nursery Harry was a wee boy rather than her wee brother. She was nearly like a second mother to him because of the age difference and she was also very protective of [her 10-year-old brother] Matthew who has autism. She seemed to be drawn to other children who had issues and would try to help them. I know in my heart she would have made a difference and would have helped many children to deal with their issues."
