Derry-Coleraine Train Line To Close For Works

Two Northern Irish firms have been awarded a contract for major track engineering works on the railway line between Londonderry and Coleraine.

The line will close completely from July 29 until next spring to allow the works to be carried out.

McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd and McCann BAM Rail JV will carry out the work in a contract worth more than £17m.

It is a major part of Translink’s track renewals project, funded by more than £50m from the Department for Regional Development (DRD).

Eugene O'Brien, Head of Track at Translink NI Railways, said the project marked a "significant investment".

He said: "Passengers will notice train journeys are more comfortable, trains will be quieter and the overall performance of the line will be maintained at a high level.

We are pleased to announce these contracts and would like to thank the DRD for essential funding to carry out this work."

Mr O'Brien said Translink would make "every effort" to keep disturbance down, such as by doing the work during sociable hours.

He said: "This section of the track passes through some of our most scenic coastline and the completion of this project will allow us to build on this asset, contributing to the economic and social regeneration of the area."

Mr O'Brien warned that engineering trains will be used along the line, and people should use railway crossings safely and avoid using the track as a shortcut.
