Foyle Cup Kicks Off
A youth football tournament has kicked off in Londonderry, with competitors coming from as far afield as Canada to take part.
More than 160 teams from near and far will compete in the 2012 Foyle Cup, in age groups from under-10 to under-19.
The tournament began as a Derry City Council project in 1992 and still has financial assistance from the council.
The manager of Wicklow-based Arklow United compared the tournament to a rite of passage.
Brian Byrne said: "This is our seventh visit. The tournament is an integral part of the players' pathway. It's something we like them to do because we are preparing them for playing international football."
And Bessam Naim, director with the ONB football academy in Ontario, said: "Derry is a very hospitable city. The people are very nice. It is a very nice trip coming here."
The tournament continues all week, with games at venues across Londonderry, Eglington and Strabane.
The finals will be held in Brandywell Stadium, Lone Moor Road, on Saturday between noon and 4pm.
