Council Sets Targets Of Creating 110 Jobs This Year
Belfast City Council has set itself a target of providing 110 job opportunities before the end of the current financial year.
These opportunities are part of the 200 jobs the council announced when it revealed its £150 million Investment Programme (2012-15), which it launched in February.
The council has also undertaken to provide 400 placement, internship and apprentice opportunities during the next three years and the first 170 of these will also be filled within the next 12 months with a focus on young unemployed people, long term unemployed, disabled people and graduates.
Councillor Deirdre Hargey, chair of the council's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, said: "The council's party leaders have all agreed that boosting the city`s economy is its top priority and delivering a total of 200 job opportunities during these economically difficult times is a significant undertaking.
"We have also assured ratepayers that the provision of these jobs will not be an additional burden on the rates. We will achieve this by reviewing some vacant posts and re-designing them to support the investment programme and improve service delivery, as well as creating permanent, directly employed posts by reducing dependency on agency workers, temporary staff and overtime working.
"All the posts will be central to supporting the investment and providing better service delivery, and the aim is to provide 110 job opportunities this year, a further 60 in year two and the final 30 in year three."

Details Of Major School Building Projects Announced
The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., today announced details of 219 new major school building projects which will begin over the next five years as part of a €2 billion capital investment programme. These new projects are in addition to 56 major school building projects that he already announced for 2012.

NI unemployment figures increase
The number of people unemployed in Northern Ireland is on the increase according to the latest figures. Labour force statistics released on Wednesday revealed that some 46,000 people are unemployed, a rise of 3,000 on the this time last year.

Offshore Company Axes Jobs
Around 150 jobs in Aberdeen and Dundee have been axed after an offshore services company ceased trading. Oceanteam Power and Umbilical has been forced to close when the firm's holding company withdrew its financial support. Staff are based in Aberdeen, at workshops in Dundee and offshore.
