Ritchie Saddened By Fire Death In Newcastle
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said she was saddened by the news of the death of a woman in her 60s in a house fire in Merrion Avenue, Newcastle.
She said: "This is a very tragic event which has claimed the life of a woman whom I believe was very well-known and well-liked in the Newcastle area.
"My deepest sympathies and prayers go to her family and anyone else who was close to her.
"I commend the efforts of the Fire and Rescue service whose officers fought the blaze most valiantly but were, unfortunately, unable to save this lady’s life.
"Although the circumstances surrounding this fire are unclear, I still urge householders to heed Fire Service advice about making sure their homes are as fireproof as possible and to always plan for escape in case of emergency."
