New Team To Investigate McAreavey Murder
A new police team has been formed to investigate the murder of County Tyrone newlywed Michaela McAreavey.
It comes after two men were acquitted of the January 2011 murder at Mauritius Supreme Court, in a trial that exposed failings in the original police investigation.
The court heard that key witnesses had not been interviewed, crucial DNA evidence had not been taken, and widower John McAreavey had been the butt of a joke by a police officer in the hours after he found his wife strangled in their honeymoon suite.
The man allegedly said to him that there were many other women and he would find another wife.
The announcement of a new investigations team also follows the allegations in court that defendant Avinash Treebhoowoon, now found not guilty, was forced into signing a confession after being beaten up by police.
The new investigation will be carried out under Superintendent Yaswant Callee of the Central Criminal Investigation Division, assisted by Divisional Inspector Roland Dabeesing of the Anti Drug Smuggling Unit and other police officers.
They will start by questioning people who were in the immediate proximity of the McAreaveys' room in the Legends hotel shortly before the murder, and they will examine all DNA samples found at the scene.
Mauritius's foreign affairs minister, Arvin Boolell, promised that "no stone will be left unturned" until Mrs McAreavey's killers are found.
