RIR involved in capture of over 1,000 Iraqis

British troops, including men from the Royal Irish Regiment, have accepted the surrender of over 1,000 Iraqi soldiers in the south of the war-torn country.

The 1st Battalion RIR assisted in taking hundreds of Iraqi's into captivity, and handed out rations suitable for Muslims to the starving men. One RIR soldier is quoted as saying that the Iraqis were bedraggled but "happy" to be away from the fighting.

Also in the south, Britain has registered its second combat death of the campaign after a member of the Black Watch – a Scottish regiment – was killed near Basra last night. His death follows on from the death of 33-year-old Sergeant Steven Roberts of the Royal Tank Regiment who succumbed to wounds sustained in a firefight on Sunday.

The two deaths add to the tally of 16 British armed forces personnel who have so far died as a result of accidents and friendly fire incidents.
