Co Tyrone Residents Fight Waste Transfer Plant
Residents in County Tyrone are fighting plans for a waste transfer facility near their homes, the BBC has reported.
The facility, which would store oil and garage waste and have up to 25 deliveries and removals a day, is earmarked for Ballygawley.
OSS Group Limited, the group behind the application, said the development would create jobs and be environmentally friendly, by taking waste oil, fluids, car batteries and other waste.
The application states that normal hours will be 07:00 - 17:00 BST during the week and 07:00 - 12:00 BST on Saturday, with an option to extend from 06:00 - 21:00 BST when necessary.
Residents' spokesman Jon Stewart said the facility should be put in an industrial zone.
He said: "You would have the infrastructure there and you would probably have contingency and emergency plans in place for major spills which we clearly don't think there is here."
The site already has planning approval for end-of-life vehicle dismantling and OSS Group has applied to change its use and store garage waste temporarily.
The company said the site would be a transfer station before waste is shipped for recycling elsewhere in the UK.
A decision is expected within the coming months.

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has refused planning permission for a proposed large scale waste treatment facility on the site of the former Hightown Quarry, Boghill Road, Newtownabbey. The application by arc21 proposed a residual waste treatment facility that has the ability to thermally treat 300,000 tonnes per year of municipal waste.
