Axing Of Apprenticeship Schemes 'Short-Sighted' - Heading
SDLP Lisburn Cllr Brian Heading has said it is nonsensical for the Department of Employment and Learning to cut apprenticeship schemes for those over the age of 25.
This will take effect from the end of August.
Cllr Heading said: "It is incredibly short -sighted to cut apprentice training schemes in a recession. With our economy on the rocks and unemployment at its highest level in decades, government should be providing more schemes to re-integrate people into the labour market rather than cutting programmes which re-skill and equip people to have a greater chance of employment.
"In the Dunmurry area so many people feel alienated and hopeless. With harsh welfare cuts on the way and the collapse of many of our local independent retailers, it is more important than ever for these apprenticeship schemes to be available to people of all ages.
"I urge the Executive to re-consider their decision to axe these programmes and to do more to train people to help them get jobs."

The survey of 5,500 work-based apprentices - the first of its kind to analyse pay by sector - shows that those on Government approved schemes are taking home over £500 a month on average.

NI training schemes suffer cutbacks
Some of Northern Ireland's most recognised training schemes are to be cut, the Government announced today. The Worktrack programme, which provides 26 weeks of work based training is to be scrapped, while there are to be cuts to Learndirect, an online learning scheme, as well as cuts to specialist IT and management training schemes.

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry has launched a new apprenticeship programme at Norbrook Laboratories Ltd in Newry. Speaking at the launch, the Minister said: "I commend Norbrook Laboratories for creating opportunities for young people to gain employment in the pharmaceutical industry.

Tesco is to lay off staff at its Republic of Ireland headquarters in Dún Laoghaire - and all because of increasing levels of shoppers heading North. Around 140 workers are to go following its decision to import more goods directly from the UK rather than sourcing them through Irish suppliers.
