Two Bids For Local Belfast TV Channel

Two submissions have been made to run a Belfast-based local television service, under culture minister Jeremy Hunt's plans for US-style local TV across the UK.

Northern Visions and Made in Belfast TV submitted applications to Ofcom for the licence ahead of a Monday deadline.

Belfast is one of twenty 'pioneer' cities in the plans - alongside places including Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Liverpool and Manchester, it will have a local service that is likely to be funded by advertising.

The start-up costs will be funded by the BBC’s licence fee.

When Mr Hunt announced the plans last December, he said it was important for MPs to be held accountable to their constituents, and stressed that he wanted to see a thriving local sector.

Mr Hunt said: "Local TV providers will need to produce quality content that people want to watch, which in turn will make it attractive to advertisers."

Londonderry and Limavady have also been pinpointed as potential locations for a future channels.
