Toxic Materials To Be Buried Under New Carrickfergus Flats
Homes are to be built on contaminated land in Carrickfergus, the Carrick Advertiser has reported.
Approval was granted for two apartment blocks, containing 18 apartments, on a former industrial site behind houses at Ellis Street in the town.
And a report undertaken as part of the planning process has found that residents of the street will be "potentially at risk" during the construction period.
The ground contains elevated levels of poisonous materials including arsenic, lead, cyanide and numerous cancer causing chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Safety measures will be needed during the construction period.
Planning permission was first granted in 2008 for the development, but conditions stated contaminated material must be moved offsite to a landfill.
But new government guidelines mean that some of the material can now be kept on site and buried under car parks and the apartment blocks.
A risk assessment report carried out by Ecologia Environmental Solutions last September suggested that it would be more "cost effective" to bury the material on site than to remove it to a landfill.
