Call For Govt To Tackle Unemployment

SIPTU has called on the Government to focus more resources on combating the growth in the numbers of long term unemployment.

Responding to the Central Statistics Office latest Live Register figures published SIPTU Economist, Marie Sherlock, said: "The decline of 2000 in the number of people on the Live Register is cold comfort, as the numbers signing on for 12 months or longer has risen to catastrophic levels. Last month, the numbers on the Live register for 12 months or longer breached the 200,000 mark and there has been a further increase during the month of August to bring the total numbers to 44% of those signing on."
