Belfast-Shot Rihanna Video Scoops MTV Gong

A controversial Rihanna video filmed in north Belfast has won MTV's Video of the Year award.

The film for the singer's Calvin Harris collaboration We Found Love, shot in the city a year ago, featured a tower block flat in the New Lodge area and a County Down field.

The global superstar's scenes in the field attracted worldwide attention when the farm's owner saw the singer topless and asked her to cover up.

Alan Graham, a DUP alderman, said her appearance was "inappropriate".

And New Lodge residents objected to the use of images of their area in a bleak video with the lyrics 'We found love in a hopeless place' over them.

Northern Ireland's social development minister Nelson McCausland said the video was "set against a background of drugs, alcohol and gambling, interspersed with shots of the New Lodge flats and views of the general area".

"A hopeless place? Fortunately most people who see the video will have no idea where it was filmed."

The award, presented in Los Angeles, made Rihanna the first female artist to win the Video of the Year award twice - she won it previously for Umbrella.
