71-Year-Old Arrested For Escaping Custody 38 Years Ago

A 71-year-old man has been arrested for escaping custody in connection with a murder in Belfast 38 years ago.

He was detained in Newtownards, Co Down, earlier on Tuesday and is being interviewed by police about the shooting of 21-year-old Ellen McDowell in 1974.

McDowell was shot in the head as she walked with her boyfriend in the city's Shankill area on April 6, 1974.

Ms McDowell, from Glenvarna Drive, Glengormley, Co Antrim, had just left a club when a car pulled up at the corner of Loftus Street and Beresford Street, and a single shot was fired.
