71-Year-Old Arrested For Escaping Custody 38 Years Ago
A 71-year-old man has been arrested for escaping custody in connection with a murder in Belfast 38 years ago.
He was detained in Newtownards, Co Down, earlier on Tuesday and is being interviewed by police about the shooting of 21-year-old Ellen McDowell in 1974.
McDowell was shot in the head as she walked with her boyfriend in the city's Shankill area on April 6, 1974.
Ms McDowell, from Glenvarna Drive, Glengormley, Co Antrim, had just left a club when a car pulled up at the corner of Loftus Street and Beresford Street, and a single shot was fired.
The arrested man has been charged with escaping from lawful custody in May 1974. He is due to appear in court in Belfast tomorrow.

Man Arrested After Using Van To Attack Police Officers
The PSNI has condemned an incident in which a man used a van to repeatedly ram a police patrol car and attempted to run over an officer in Newry on Saturday, 03 February. Shortly after 11:20pm, officers on patrol approached a man standing beside a white Peugeot van in the Castlekeele Estate area.
