Omagh Tesco Bid Withdrawn
Tesco has withdrawn an application to build a new superstore on the edge of Omagh.
The news comes as a result of a letter to the Planning Service from a planning consultant at Tesco, requesting that the processing of the application be "stopped immediately".
The letter refers to the passing of a time limit for a deal between Tesco and developer Opportunity Omagh.
"Due to the legal contract between the applicant and the developer in relation to this site having passed its longstop date, we wish to withdraw this application with immediate effect", it states.
The "longstop date" refers to a legal term which indicates specific conditions must be met by a certain time. Failure to meet the specified conditions means one of the parties to a contract can walk away.
The Tesco application for a food superstore, petrol filling station and associated car parking had originally been submitted to NI Planning Service in September 2011.
Almost a year later, it seems the supermarket giant has pulled the plug on the operation.
It is thought that Tesco might still submit an application in the future.
The potential location for the Tesco store is a 37-acre site with outline planning permission for various business and leisure uses.
Attention has now turned to another 7,000 square metres superstore on the Mountjoy Road, which has received recommendation from planners.
This recommendation will be discussed by Omagh Council's planning committee next month.

Appeal For Information On 'Nasty' Robbery In Omagh
PSNI detectives have issued an appeal for information following a "nasty" robbery in Omagh. Police received a report, that at around 1.30am on Monday, 19th February a man aged in his in his 40s was cycling in the Cranny Road area of the town, alongside the river, when he was set upon by a group of six people, dressed in dark clothing with hoods up.

Tesco Superstore To Get Underway
Hundreds of construction jobs are expected to be created following full planning approval for a new Tesco superstore. The store will be situated in Newtownards, north Down, on the site of the old Ards Abattoir off the Portaferry Road. The project, which includes a petrol station and parking spaces, will result in the creation of 200 retail jobs.
