Antrim Village Wins 'Britain In Bloom' Award
A village in County Antrim has won the top prize at the annual Britain in Bloom awards.
Ballymena village Broughshane was awarded with the title 'Champion of Champions; an award given to those towns and villages which have consistently done well in the contest over the years.
The award was presented at a ceremony in Guernsey on Saturday October 6.
The nearby village of Ahoghill also won a gold medal in the Best Small Town category.
Broughshane has won the title before, being crowned Champion of Champions in 2007.
The award is organised and judged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
One RHS judge said "the sense of pride in the community is refreshingly evident" and commended "25 years of solid hard work and vision" by the villagers.
The chairman of Broughshane village improvement committee, Sandy Wilson, led a nine person expedition to the Channel Islands to collect the award.
He said: "We were absolutely thrilled, because we have won Britain in Bloom a number of times - I think 10 times since 1993 - but this is the top award and, because this is our 25th anniversary, it's a very special year.
"It's a tribute to all of those people in the village of Broughshane and the surrounding area who help us in all of our community work."
He said it was a "very prestigious title" and raise the profile of the village, attracting visitors and supporting the jobs of the 300 people currently employed in Broughshane.
Mr Wilson also extended his congratulations to Ahoghill, calling it a "tremendous achievement for the borough of Ballymena."
