Men In Court Over €100,000 Kidnapping
Two men have appeared in court charged with kidnapping a cattle dealer for a €100,000 ransom.
Patrick McCall, 39 and Robert Vevers, 55, appeared in Dungannon Court facing the charges, which also include false imprisonment and blackmail.
The court heard from police how Mr Vevers had brought the victim to Northern Ireland on 1 October under the pretense of a potential business opportunity.
The man was then handed over to a gang and was held until last Saturday when a €100,000 ransom was paid by his father.
The victim was released in Drogheda, County Louth, under the conditions that the money would be left in a hedge.
A detective sergeant told the court the money was used to then repay a debt to a gang held gang by Mr Vevers, who is from Scotland.
The court was told the case involved cattle dealers.
The officer said the arrests were made as part of an ongoing investigation spanning Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic.
The prosecution in the case has objected to a bail application from Mr Vevers.
The information sheds light on news released last week that five people had been arrested in Omagh as part of an investigation into serious crime.
A total of four men and a woman were arrested on October 6.
On Monday, a 28-year-old man was released on bail pending further inquiries while on Tuesday, a 38-year-old woman was released unconditionally. One further man remains in custody.
The case continues.
